Construction of an 87 MW Kakono plant in Kagera Region in North Western Tanzania and an associated evacuation transmission line to Kyaka substation west of Bukoba.
To increase the Country’s renewable energy production and contribute to increased access to modern energy and reliability of power supply in the northern region
The project is under development stage. Both AfDB/AFD undertook a field mission in May 2017 to Kakono site to establish TANESCO’s readiness. It was established that a few items will need to be submitted to the financiers by TANESCO to move the project to the next stage of appraisal. The next mission is planned for February 2019. In the meantime, Tanesco is finalizing preparations with the engagement of an Independent Panel of Experts and finalizing compensation of the project affected people
The contract status is under preparation and there is no timeline for presentation of this project for Board approval.
The project aims to construct a 87MW hydropower plant as associated transmission lines in Kakono. It will boost the country’s renewable energy production and will reduce 305 kton CO2 equivalent GHG emissions per year.
Kakono is located in the North Western Kagera Region therefore, it will enhance power trade between Tanzania and Uganda upon completion of the 220 kV Masaka (in Uganda) and Mwanza (in Tanzania) transmission lines.
