More than 26 million hectares of Namibian rangelands are affected by encroacher bush, which reduces the revenues from activities related to agriculture by more than a billion Namibian dollars each year. The biomass however can be used as a potential feedstock for thermal power plants, and would thereby create new development opportunities in bush-infested areas of the country.
Based on the outcome of the feasibility study, NamPower has decided to implement a 40MW biomass Power Station which will be procured on NamPower’s balance sheet and developed on an EPC basis. The power station will be located in close proximity to the town of Tsumeb and is planned for completion by 2022. The power station will be fueled from biomass woodchips which is harvested and supplied from a harvesting area extending beyond a 100 km radius around the Project Site.
The continuous supply of affordable fuel remains a critical aspect for the long-term operation of a biomass-powered plant. This implies that the entire biomass supply chain, from the harvesting site to the plant gate needs to be cost-effective, and viable. In the absence of a fuel-supply industry, this aspect therefore remains to be further refined, before such plant can be commissioned.
There is wide-spread consensus that the harvesting of bush-encroached agricultural land holds many socio-economic promises for Namibia. In addition, biomass -powered plant was considered under the NIRP, and has emerged as one of the promising technologies that should be advances in the country.
